Call for applications from interested young graduates in agriculture from both Solomon Islands and overseas tertiary and technical institutes is now open

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) is pleased to announce an opportunity for the recruitment of eight (8) local youth agriculture graduates from the Solomon Islands NationalUniversity (SINU), RTCs and graduates from other regional universities in and around the region.
After being recruited, the eight (8)graduates will be deployed to the MAL demonstration Centre at Gozoruru, Isabel province, and at the Rice Demonstration Plot on Guadalcanal and Malaita.
They are expected to work alongside MAL technical officers and overseas agriculture scientists in the setting up ofdemonstration sites and establishment of field evaluation trials focusing on introductions of new agricultural interventions and technologies. Importantly, graduates are expected to fully participate and assist in undertaking essentialtasks specific to rice and maize cultivation and not limited to the following;
1. Field preparations and establishment of field demonstration plots
2. Apply recommended crop spacing/plant density for crop varieties under trials for observation and evaluation purposes
3.ย Actively engaged in the establishment and installation of irrigation canals and irrigation systems,
4. Perform crop irrigation duties andfertilizer applications
5. Undertake routine field managementpractices, especially weed control, pest and disease (IPDM)
6. Perform crop growth assessment andvarietal yield evaluations
7. Record and maintain updated data collection on crop growth performance and varietal yield performance.
8. As part of knowledge acquisitionand technology(s) transfer, recruits are expected to also undergo supervised training on how to operate specific farm machineries and equipment etc.
9. Others; perform other operationalfield duties as may be directed from time to time by supervisors.

ย Interested applicants must meet thefollowing criteria:
ย Must be a graduate from SINU or RTCor other regional universities, e.g. USP, FNU etc.
Must be a holder of a Certificate inTropical Agriculture with some work experience or a Diploma or Degreequalifications
Age eligibility, preferably age between 18 to 35 years old
Must have some relevant work experienceor attachment in the recent past three years, at least one-year work experience.

Copy of Reference letter by a seniorlecturer or HOD in agriculture from the last tertiary institution attended,
Copy of reference letter forcharacter reference preferably written by someone known to him/her personally,preferably a community leader or church elder/pastor, friend and mentor thatfocusses on personality and values-like honesty and dependability.
Copy of police clearance report.

Successful applications will beentitled to receive allowances on a fortnightly basis, at level 5/6 -PublicService Unified Pay Structure
ย No Housing allowance will be provided
ย Housing is not provided in Honiaraexcept at the MAL provincial demonstration farm at Gozoruru, Isabel province and on Malaita.
